Technology Rant and Leftovers

Today, following a Paleo diet was not my biggest challenge.  This morning I decided that I was not going to go on the internet until after the kids were in bed.  I realized that I needed to practice what I preached. I constantly tell the kids that they need to limit their screen time, but yet, I am often checking my email, Facebook, amazon, etc.  I woke up at 6:45am and was grabbing for a computer by 8:00am, but I did not do it.  I wanted to prove to myself that I could live without technology for 12 hours.  It was tough, like really tough, which is pretty sad.  I am mad at myself for how hard it was.  It was eye opening.  So, I am going to try to follow the after bedtime rule as closely as possible.  I know I am going to fail.

I want my children to understand and learn to use technology, but I am a little saddened that they will never know what a typewriter, a card catalog or an encyclopedia is.  In fact, this was a conversation in Austin's 4 year old preschool class last year.

Teacher: "Where can we find information about whales?"

Kids: "the computer."

Teacher: "what if you did not have a computer?

Kids: "Ipad. Iphone. Kindle. Blackberry."

Teacher: "What if you didn't have any of those either?

Kids: Silence.
Then one kid raised his hand and said, " Go to Target and buy one."

Seriously, they had no idea that they could look up information in a book. As an English teacher, this just about destroyed me.  It is heartbreaking to me that my kids are going to grow up not having to go to a library to get information for a research paper.  They will just sit on the couch or at the kitchen table and scroll through the internet on God only knows what device.  But again, of course I want to see technological advances; I just wish books didn't have to become obsolete.  A little hypocritical for me to say though since I read the majority of my books on the Nook. In fact, I will probably start reading Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol when I finish typing this, so I should get on with the food for the day.

Breakfast: Coffee in a large travel mug with caramel mocha cream of course and just realized I never ate anything.

Lunch: A perfectly cooked baked potato with a little bit of BBQ sauce on top, carrots and a clementine.  I LOVE a crispy potato skin with sea salt rubbed on it.

Dinner: I had a large salad with baby romaine, green olives, cucumbers and the leftover shrimp(cold).  I also had a ton of blackberries.  The kids had leftover balsamic rosemary chicken and broccoli and Paul had a sandwich when he got home from a meeting at 6:30.

Snacks: I had fruit snacks, Dole dippers and a few nuts.  I may do a smoothie tonight too.

I said that tomorrow was going to be crock pot chicken, but I just saw flank steak in my fridge that I need to cook before it goes bad. Therefore, Beef is what's for dinner tomorrow.

XOXO

So, let's talk about today's other success. My meals.  Nothing super exciting as it was leftovers for dinner, but everything was still very tasty.
