Eating Paleo at a Party

Last night was Paul's end of the semester party at his department secretary's house in Schaumburg.  Her house was massive and absolutely gorgeous.  Her basement alone was probably bigger than my first and second floor combined.  Just seeing the house would have been enough to make it worth going, but the amount of food and laughter throughout the night made it even better. I love Paul's
coworkers.  His two work wives and I have a  great time together!  Coincidently, one of his work wives used to teach at West Aurora with me but in the math department.  She transferred to Rolling Meadows eight years ago and ended up sitting across from Paul in the office.  They immediately hit it off and became fast friends.

His other work wife is a phenomenal baker.  She always makes the most ridiculously divine desserts.  She's famous for her bar cookies.  She'll do a brownie on top of a cookie on top of a layer of fudge with a peanut butter chocolate frosting.  I mean crazy ass stuff that ends up tasting like the most amazing thing you have ever put into your mouth.  So on the way to the party, I told Paul that most likely I would end up cheating because of whatever concoction Eileen brought to the party.  I told myself that I would allow myself one bite of her creation.  This did not happen.  See below.

Louisa, his secretary, makes an entire Italian meal for all of us and our job is to bring a dessert or appetizer. I brought basil pesto bruschetta. Heather made this for Christmakah and Christmas and it was a crowd favorite, so I figured I couldn't go wrong bringing it to an Italian themed soiree. Not to toot my own horn, but my appetizer was the only one that was completely gone and everyone complimented me on it. Boy, was it a toughie! Store bought pesto(from the refrigerated section), French bread, plum tomatoes, and shredded parmesan.  I put it together in less than 10 minutes!!

They also provide all the alcohol that they serve while standing behind their huge full service bar.  Paul had several(3) gin and tonicsand I had one shot of lemoncello because everyone was toasting the hosts and, obviously, I didn't want to be rude.  The rest of the time I drank water.  Lucky Paul, I'm not even pregnant anymore, and he still has an automatic DD.

I did soooo good at the party. There were actually a ton of Paleo friendly options. I ate shrimp, veggies, Italian sausage and Italian beef with red sauce on top sans bun, fancy hard salami, and cocoa dusted almonds!!!  I was sooo proud of myself UNTIL frickin Eileen showed up with a CANNOLI DIP tray from Mariano's. Now, only Dianna can truly understand my love affair with cannolis.  It all began when we were in Vegas, and I had my first cannoli from the MGM Grand buffet.  It blew my mind and ever since then I have never met a cannoli I didn't like or one that I could refuse.  Last night, unfortunately, was no different.  Believe me, I tried. I tried so hard to walk away from that tray of deliciousness, but I just couldn't. I felt like I was betraying the cannoli if I didn't at least taste it. So I did. I took one cannoli chip and dipped it very sparingly into the creamy dip. Then I took another. And another.  After three, I proceeded to go to every person at the party and insist they try the dip as well. My plan was to make everyone else fall in love with it so that it would be gone, and it was working. But then I got nervous that it really would be gone, and I wouldn't be able to have just one more.  So, I had one more. And than another.  But that's it, I swear.  Five cannoli chips and I don't regret a single one of them.  However, I did feel sick, but I didn't give a shit.

So moral of the story: I fell off the wagon. But again, I am trying to make this a new way of life for me and the fact is that sometimes due to environment or the complete and utter lack of will power sometimes I am going to cheat and that's okay because I am only human.  But today is another day, and today I did better.

I will double post tonight; so look for today's post a little later on.

XOXO
